Industrial salt

Industrial salt is a critical raw material in virtually every production environment. Whether used as a process raw material in the chemical industry, for the regeneration of ion exchangers in water treatment installations, or as a cleaning and auxiliary agent in industrial production lines, the quality of the salt directly determines the stability of your process. Nederlandse Zouthandel supplies industrial salt with a guaranteed, consistent composition and high purity, backed by certificates of analysis per batch.

What is industrial salt?

Industrial salt is sodium chloride (NaCl) produced for industrial applications, with a purity ranging from 99.4% to more than 99.95% NaCl depending on the type. It is obtained via three production methods: vacuum evaporation (the purest form, suitable for high-grade process applications), solar evaporation, and underground mining (rock salt). For industrial process applications, vacuum salt is used almost exclusively, due to its consistent grain size, low levels of calcium, magnesium and sulphates, and reproducible batch composition.

Industrial applications of industrial salt

Industrial salt plays a key role in countless industrial processes. In the chemical industry, it is used as a primary raw material for chlor-alkali electrolysis, producing chlorine, caustic soda and hydrogen, as well as for the production of soda and other sodium compounds. In industrial water treatment, it is indispensable for the regeneration of ion exchangers in water softeners, demineralisation installations, and condensate polishing units at steam boilers and cooling systems. In this way, it plays a central role in refineries, power plants and chemical installations that produce process water, boiler feed water and cooling water.

Industrial salt is also a fixture in industrial cleaning processes. In CIP systems (Cleaning in Place) in food production, breweries, the dairy industry and pharmaceutical production lines, it is used for the regeneration of water softeners that supply the process water. In food production itself, it functions as a technological auxiliary or raw material in brine baths, brine solutions and fermentation processes. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry uses it in production processes where low levels of heavy metals and microbiological purity are essential.

In addition, industrial salt finds its way into textile dyeing and tanning as a process raw material in dye and tanning baths where a constant ionic strength is required. In the glass, ceramics and metal industries, it is used as a smelting and process raw material and in baths for surface treatment. The oil and gas industry applies it as a component in drilling fluids and completion brines, while manufacturers of detergents and industrial chemicals use it as a raw material and as a regulator of pH and density.

Quality and specifications

In the process industry, consistent quality matters more than temporarily high quality. A deviation in calcium, magnesium or sulphate content can lead to membrane fouling, reduced electrolysis yields or deviations in end products. Our industrial salt meets strict specifications, and upon request each delivery is accompanied by a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) with the exact batch specifications. Batch traceability is guaranteed from production to delivery.

Our customers choose Nederlandse Zouthandel for the consistent batch quality delivered to fixed specifications, so that no surprises occur in your process. Our specialists support you with technical advice in selecting the right grade for your specific process requirements, and supply reliability is guaranteed during peak demand. You have one dedicated point of contact for planning, logistics and quality.

Frequently Asked Questions About Industrial Salt

  • For industrial ion exchangers in water treatment, condensate polishing installations and demineralisation systems, vacuum salt in PDV grade with at least 99.9% NaCl and low Ca/Mg values is recommended. Lower grades lead to fouling of the resin bed and shorten the lifespan of the resin.

  • Yes. Every delivery is accompanied by a CoA containing the actual batch analysis, including NaCl content and levels of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, SO₄²⁻, insoluble matter and moisture. Additional analyses such as heavy metals can be provided on request.

  • For vacuum salt in PDV grade, typical levels are: Ca²⁺ below 400 ppm, Mg²⁺ below 200 ppm, SO₄²⁻ below 2,500 ppm and insoluble matter below 0.01%. Stricter specifications, for example Ca²⁺ below 100 ppm, are available on request.

  • Bulk deliveries are made by silo truck and pneumatically blown into your silo. We coordinate logistics, delivery times and silo connection with you in advance. Brine is delivered by tanker.

  • Yes. For structural supply we work with annual contracts with fixed prices, agreed volumes and guaranteed delivery times. VMI arrangements are available on request.

  • Do you have specific requirements regarding purity, grain size, packaging or delivery frequency? Our process salt specialists are happy to think along with you. Contact us via the contact form on our website or request a quote directly. You will receive a proposal as soon as possible, including a specification sheet and, if desired, samples for trial runs in your own installation.
