What is pool salt?
Pool salt is pure sodium chloride (NaCl) specially intended for swimming pools with a salt electrolysis system. It differs from table salt and water softener salt through a purity level of at least 99.8% and the absence of anti-caking agents or iodine. Those additives would cloud the water or could damage the electrolysis cell.
Pool salt is available in two main forms:
Evaporation salt (vacuum salt): fine, white granules with very high purity that dissolve quickly and completely, making it the preferred choice for modern salt electrolysis systems.
Rock salt: coarser in structure, often slightly more affordable, and well suited for systems that operate at higher salt concentrations.
How much pool salt do I need?
For a recommended salt concentration of 4 g/l (4,000 ppm), you need approximately 4 kg of pool salt per cubic metre (1,000 litres) of pool water. The table on the product page helps you determine the right quantity for your pool.
Salt electrolysis: how does it work?
With salt electrolysis, pool water flows through an electrolysis cell where the dissolved salt is converted into active chlorine. That chlorine disinfects the water and is then converted back into salt. The salt level therefore remains virtually constant — you only top up pool salt after water loss due to backwashing, dilution or evaporation.
Our pool salts
Suprasel pool salt 25 kg
Premium evaporation salt from Salins with an exceptionally high purity of 99.9%. The compact, uniform granule dissolves quickly and completely and is particularly suitable for modern, sensitive salt electrolysis cells. Many pool builders recommend Suprasel as standard.
Poolsel pool salt 25 kg
A popular and certified pool salt from Zoutman with fine granules, high purity and fast solubility. Suitable for virtually all common salt electrolysis systems.
Marina pool salt 25 kg
A reliable pool salt from K+S with good solubility. Suitable for systems that operate with higher salt concentrations.
Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Salt
-
Which salt should I use for my swimming pool?
Always use specialist pool salt with a purity of at least 99.8% and without anti-caking agents or iodine. Table salt and water softener salt are not suitable as they contain additives that can damage the electrolysis cell or cloud the water.
-
How much pool salt do I need per m³?
Allow for approximately 4 kg of pool salt per cubic metre of water to reach the recommended concentration of 4 g/l. A pool of 50 m³ therefore requires around 200 kg of pool salt, which is 8 bags of 25 kg.
-
What is the difference between Suprasel, Poolsel and Marina pool salt?
Suprasel and Poolsel are both evaporation salts with fine granules and very high purity that dissolve quickly. Suprasel is known for its highest purity (99.9%) and is often recommended for modern electrolysis cells. Poolsel is a reliable alternative with comparable quality. Marina is a rock salt with a coarser granule, equally effective and suitable for systems that are less critical when it comes to dissolving time.
-
Can I use regular table salt or water softener salt in my swimming pool?
No. Table salt often contains iodine and anti-caking agents that cloud the water. Water softener salt is not always sufficiently pure for pool use and may contain impurities that damage the electrolysis cell. Always use specifically designated pool salt.
-
How often do I need to top up pool salt?
The salt level only drops through water loss, for example through backwashing, dilution after heavy rainfall or water replacement. Measure the salt level monthly with a test strip or digital salt meter and top up to 4 g/l. In an average season you will typically need to add pool salt once or twice.
-
How long does it take for pool salt to dissolve?
With a continuously running circulation pump, pool salt usually dissolves completely within 24 to 48 hours. Spread the salt evenly over the deep end of the pool, not via the skimmer, and run the pump on continuous circulation for 24 hours.
-
Is swimming in a saltwater pool healthy?
For most people, a saltwater pool is more pleasant than a traditional chlorine pool: the water feels softer, smells less and causes less skin and eye irritation. The salt level of 4 g/l is much lower than that of seawater (35 g/l) and is well tolerated by most skin types.
-
When is the best time to order pool salt?
The pool season runs from April through August. Order your pool salt preferably in March or early April, before the seasonal peak. This ensures immediate delivery and allows you to benefit from the most favourable pricing.
