Our range of salt blocks
Which salt blocks does Nederlandse Zouthandel offer?
We deliberately carry two brands of salt blocks: nedzal® and Axal. Together they cover the two most common formats and offer you the assurance of A-quality block salt.
What are salt blocks used for at home?
Salt blocks have one primary application: regenerating your water softener, so you can enjoy soft, limescale-free water throughout your home. In large parts of the Netherlands and Belgium, tap water is hard to very hard — and you notice it almost everywhere water is used. With a well-stocked water softener, every room in your home benefits from the comfort of soft water.
-
In the kitchen
In the kitchen, softened water makes a visible difference on almost every appliance and surface. Your dishwasher runs more efficiently and glassware comes out of the machine without limescale streaks.
Coffee makers, espresso machines and kettles need descaling far less often and demonstrably last longer. Taps and sinks also stay spotless for longer, without constantly reaching for the cleaning cloth.
-
In the bathroom
The difference between hard and soft water is especially noticeable in the bathroom. Shower screens, tiles, taps and mirrors stay clean much longer, as limescale barely has a chance to form.
In the shower, you'll find that soap and shampoo lather much more easily, so you need less product. Many users also notice softer skin and more supple hair, particularly if they are sensitive to the limescale in tap water.
-
For laundry
Your washing machine is one of the biggest beneficiaries of soft water. Because detergent dissolves fully and limescale cannot attack the heating elements, your machine runs more efficiently and lasts longer.
Your laundry also feels noticeably softer, and clothing and towels wear out more slowly. Many households find they can get by with significantly less detergent.
-
Heating and hot water
Limescale build-up in your boiler, water heater or combi boiler acts as an insulating layer on the heating elements. As a result, your system has to work harder to produce the same hot water, leading to higher energy bills.
With softened water, these elements stay clean and your heating system retains its original efficiency. This extends the lifespan of your installation and saves you directly on energy costs.

Frequently asked questions about salt blocks
-
How does a water softener work with salt blocks?
A water softener contains ion exchange resin that removes calcium and magnesium ions — the cause of limescale — from tap water. Over time, this resin becomes saturated and needs to be regenerated. To do this, the water softener uses a brine solution made by dissolving the salt blocks in the salt reservoir. The brine flushes the resin clean, after which it can absorb limescale again. Salt blocks are therefore essential for a properly functioning water softener.
-
What are the benefits of lime-free water?
Lime-free water offers many benefits: no limescale build-up on taps, shower heads, glassware, and tiles; a significantly longer lifespan for your washing machine, dishwasher, coffee maker, and central heating boiler; softer laundry that wears out less quickly; reduced use of cleaning products and detergent; and lower energy costs thanks to clean heating elements. In addition, many people immediately notice greater comfort when showering.
-
How many salt blocks does an average household use?
Consumption depends on the hardness of your tap water, water usage, and the capacity of your water softener. An average four-person household in a hard water area uses roughly 50 to 75 kg of salt per year. One pack of Nedzal 4 kg (8 kg total) or a box of Axal 2.5 kg (10 kg total) typically lasts one to two months.
-
Can salt blocks spoil or absorb moisture?
Salt blocks have an almost unlimited shelf life as long as they are stored dry. If you do not store the blocks in a damp environment, they will remain usable for years.
